Gold versus income investments
Gold is often bought as protection against inflation or crises. One thing it does not do is pay income: no interest, no dividends. Its return comes only from price changes, and storage or fund fees reduce it.
What each is for
- Gold – a hedge some investors hold; price can swing widely for long periods (Investor.gov on commodities).
- Treasuries and bonds – regular interest, repaid at maturity unless the issuer defaults.
- TIPS and I bonds – interest linked to inflation.
Tax note
In the US, gains on physical gold and many gold funds can be taxed as collectibles at a higher maximum rate than other long-term gains. For income investments: IncomeGrid ranks every item by yield after tax for where you live: federal, state and each investment type (Treasuries, municipal bonds, corporate bonds, funds, REITs and filed offerings are each taxed differently).
